What is an IRS System?
An IRS system is a multi point distribution system for television satellite and radio services usually fitted to multiple dwelling units (MDUs - flats, care homes etc).
A typical IRS system will provide:

  • terrestrial digital tv (Freeview)
  • satellite (Sky, Sky+, Sky HD, Freesat)
  • radio (FM, DAB)
all from a single wall mounted socket.
An IRS system can also provide European satellite services.
This system is usually fitted to local authority buildings.

What is an MATV system?
An MATV system is a multi point distribution system for television and radio services usually fitted to multiple dwelling units (MDUs - flats, care homes etc).
A typical MATV system will provide:

  • terrestrial digital tv (Freeview)
  • radio (FM, DAB)
all from a single wall mounted socket.
MATV systems are unable to receive satellite services.
However most developers, builders etc will request a more modern IRS system as it gives the end user more flexibility in services provided.

What is SMATV?
SMATV for short, is an enhanced version of the MATV system.
SMATV systems are usually used in hotels and colleges. A SMATV system will provide terrestrial digital tv, but can also provide satellite tv channels. Typically SMATV systems are used in hotels to give give more choice of programs for guests.
How it works is a rack of electronic equipment is fitted with multiple satellite receivers set to channels you choose (movies, sport, music, even foreign satellite channels) and then fed in to the SMATV network for the end user to view.
